Interviewer instructions
The questions in this module are used to obtain information about the extent to which households provide a supportive and stimulating learning environment.

This question asks for the number of books in the household, including schoolbooks and books for older children, but not picture books or books especially meant for young children.

Note that this question will only be asked once per mother/primary caretaker. If you are interviewing the same mother/primary caretaker for more than one child, ask this question when you interview her/him for the first child. Copy the response to this question to the same question in the questionnaire for the second child. If you are interviewing more than one mother/primary caretaker in the same household, ask the question once of each of the mothers/primary caretakers. Note that their responses to the number of books in the same household may be different.

Enter the number of books in the space provided. There is no need to make an actual count of books yourself. Rely on the respondent's answer, and avoid asking to see and count the books yourself, since this is likely to require extra time. If the respondent is unsure about the number of books and is not able to provide an answer the first time you ask the question, ask her/him if there are more than 10 books. If yes, circle '10'. If she/he says that there are less than 10 books, probe further to get an exact number. If there are no such books in the household, enter '00'.
